What Happens?

What Happens? #01What happens in our sessions will vary according to your needs.

Much of the time we may simply talk together about your current experience, your feelings of distress or your inner conflicts.

We may also explore the relationship between us, as our dynamic can be an important source of understanding for both of us about your way of relating with others.

I may suggest using some of the tools of Psychosynthesis and Gestalt such as inner dialogue, subpersonality work or working with images and symbols. Dreams give us direct access to the unconscious, bypassing conscious control, and are therefore one of the most fruitful ways of gaining insight into our inner worlds.

Exploring the past is an important aspect of the work. Although we are not just products of our past, our early conditioning does have a profound impact on who we are and how we see ourselves.

You will probably benefit most if you approach the process of therapy in a spirit of openness and curiosity. However, most of us are in some degree defended and don't find this easy. Working through these defences is often what much of the therapy is about.

However we work, it is often a matter of letting go of some familiar way of seeing yourself and opening up to a new, and possibly surprising or challenging, sense of who you are.
